We have all been criticising about what is not being done by the government. However, we rarely give our own solutions to any problem that we see. May be the suggestion is ridiculous - but still if we look things in a positive way may be we can suggest solutions which some one can like and decide to implement. I know this is very wishful thinking but this is surely better than just criticising.

Artificial Intelligence – An Opportunity and a Challenge for Senior Citizens

These days, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being discussed everywhere. It almost feels as if, in the near future, we won’t be able to do anything without it. But what exactly is AI? If we look closely, we have actually been using it for decades—be it a simple calculator or the early computers we worked with. The difference is that today’s AI is far more powerful, versatile, and deeply integrated into our daily lives.

The real concern, however, is that if we stop using our brains actively and begin to rely on AI for every little task, it may weaken our mental agility. Today, even for writing a simple letter or preparing a speech, people turn to ChatGPT. Experts warn that such over-dependence might make us mentally lazy. A video that recently went viral demonstrated the difference between the brain activity of AI users and that of non-users.

When the thought came to me to write my next article on this subject, I shared a short questionnaire with a few groups and also posted it on Facebook. My aim was to understand how much senior citizens (70+) knew about AI and whether they were keen to learn about it. The responses were eye-opening. Most seniors had very little knowledge of AI, yet they expressed great curiosity—especially about how it could be useful in daily life. At the same time, a few elderly individuals were already using AI.

When ChatGPT was launched on 30 November 2022, it took the world by storm. I first read about it in newspapers, and my curiosity grew stronger. In March 2023, I wrote an article titled “From Google to ChatGPT – What’s In It For Senior Citizens?”. Before writing that piece, I had discussed ChatGPT with some of my friends, and to my surprise, none of them had even heard of it. Even today, ChatGPT remains the most talked-about AI tool, but now so many new AI platforms are emerging that it has become difficult to decide which one is truly useful. There is a kind of race—whose AI can do more and better.

There is no doubt that AI is immensely useful, and the future of the world will be shaped by it. India, like other developed nations, is also moving forward in this field. IITs and other institutions are actively teaching and researching AI. Even our Prime Minister frequently refers to AI in his addresses, encouraging young people to advance further in this area.

Negative Aspects of Artificial Intelligence

At the same time, the negative aspects of AI cannot be ignored. Deepfake videos, for instance, have become a major threat, where anyone’s face can be manipulated to spread misleading messages. This makes it increasingly difficult to trust what we see on screen. Recently, I read about a tragic case where a man relied on AI to choose his medicines, which unfortunately led to his death. Although this may be an extreme example, it serves as a cautionary tale. On the other hand, AI has also proved to be a boon in the medical field. One widely shared story on social media told of a rare disease that AI was able to diagnose when even experienced doctors could not.

Therefore, it is essential that senior citizens too become aware of this technology. We possess enough wisdom and life experience to discern what is right and what is misleading, and to decide wisely how and how much to use AI. As part of the Never Say Retired mission, we aim to soon organize a workshop on AI, to help senior citizens understand how they can use it in the right way.

The initiative of the Kerala government in this regard is truly inspiring. Through its program DigiKeralaM, it set out to make every citizen digitally literate. The results were remarkable—even a 105-year-old became digitally literate under this initiative.

One of my 82-year-old acquaintances summed it up beautifully with his comment:

“I disagree with the term Artificial Intelligence. After all, it is nothing but a byproduct of human intelligence—otherwise, how could it have been created? I would rather call it Managed Intelligence.”

मैंने जब इसके बारे में अखबारों में पढ़ा, तो जिज्ञासा जागी और मार्च 2023 में मैंने इस पर एक लेख लिखा—“From Google to ChatGPT – What’s In It For Senior Citizens?”।

Seniors Must Make the Second Innings Easier

On the cricket field, once the first innings ends, a very important discussion takes place in the dressing room. The team reflects on how to play the second innings. If the first innings went well and the team is in a winning position, then the second innings is played more carefully to ensure victory. But if there were mistakes in the first innings, then the team corrects itself, makes a new strategy, and tries its best to win through the second innings.

Similarly, senior citizens are now moving on to the second inning of their lives referring to those years of life when they have got a break from job, business or regular work. It is in our hands to make this inning easy and enjoyable. We have to understand the importance of our lives. We have to live the moments of life in a simple and beautiful way, in a playful way.

Learning from the First Innings

Today’s youth must understand that the second innings of the future will be beautiful only if the first innings is played thoughtfully. Paying attention to health, living a balanced life, saving and investing, nurturing relationships—these are precautions to be included in daily life from now itself. If we adopt this discipline early, the challenges of the second innings will be far fewer. “The future is safeguarded only by the one who is alert in the present.”

Preparation for Seniors

As far as we elders are concerned, our second innings will be golden only when we learn to take care of ourselves. This is not just a time to pass, but a time to truly live. Growing older does not mean becoming tired. Rather, it is an opportunity to share experiences, refine ourselves, and contribute meaningfully to society. “Age is not weakness, it is the strength of experience.”

Health is the Real Wealth

The first and foremost need in the second innings is health. If body and mind are fit, the joy of life doubles. A little walk, regular exercise, yoga, pranayam, and balanced food—these simple habits give immense strength. Instead of depending on medicines, it is better to adopt prevention. “Wealth may be valuable, but health is priceless.”

Change in Mindset

The biggest challenge in the second innings is mental. After retirement, one suddenly feels separated from the world of work, no longer valued as before. This can bring emptiness and sadness. But if we change our perspective and realize that now we have the opportunity to do what we truly love, that emptiness transforms into enthusiasm.

Adopting new hobbies—music, writing, painting, gardening, or social service—keeps the mind joyful. Learning new technology and staying connected with the digital world also builds confidence. “Change your thinking, and life will change on its own.”

The Strength of Relationships

In the second innings, relationships become the real support. Spending time with family, interacting with children and grandchildren makes life meaningful. Friendships too must be nurtured. True friends stand by us in difficult times and lighten the journey of life. “Relationships are the wealth that only grow richer with time.”

Giving Back to Society

Our experience and knowledge are priceless for society. If we share them with the younger generation, they can avoid many mistakes. Helping the needy, joining an organization in service, teaching children, planting trees—these small acts bring immense satisfaction. “The true joy of life lies in giving, not in receiving.”

The “Never Say Retired” Approach

This philosophy teaches us that retirement is only from a job, not from life. No matter what the age, a person can always remain active. If we awaken within ourselves the belief that “we are never retired,” then every day will feel like a new opportunity. “One retires from work, not from life.”

Conclusion

The second innings will be easy and joyful only if we make it so through our thoughts and actions. If the first innings was played well, then this is the chance to play even better. And if there were shortcomings in the first innings, then the second innings is the opportunity to correct them and move towards victory.

In this phase of life, we must depend less on others and become capable enough to support those in need. That is the true beauty of life—living fully ourselves and showing others the way to live. “The real victory of life is when you make someone else’s life easier.”

Learning the Art of Living – A Must For Seniors

As we move into the later chapters of life, there arises a quiet yet powerful need—not just to live, but to live well. And by that, I don’t mean wealth, status, or activity alone. I mean living with purpose, presence, and peace. For us seniors, learning the art of living isn’t optional—it is essential. It’s about aligning our days not with busyness, but with meaning.

Many people think of ret*irement as a winding down. Retirement is not the end of purpose—it’s a chance to refine it. It’s a stage of life where we have the time, wisdom, and freedom to become more intentional about how we live. And the first step in that journey is to discover (or rediscover) our purpose.

Purpose is More Than Goals

Living with purpose doesn’t mean setting lofty goals or chasing accolades. It means tuning in to our inner compass. It means asking: What truly matters to me now? What makes my soul light up? Whom can I serve, and how can I give meaningfully?

Whether it is teaching young minds, writing our memoirs, spending time with grandchildren, learning something new, or even nurturing a garden—purpose lies in anything that aligns with our core values and brings out the best in us. It’s about quality, not quantity.

Living Intentionally, Not Accidentally

The art of living is really the art of intentionality. It’s about choosing how we speak, how we listen, how we act—and most importantly, how we respond to life’s changes. Each day is a fresh canvas, and we are the artists. The brush is in our hands. The paint is our awareness, our thoughts, our choices.

Let yesterday’s painting be beautiful, yes. But let today’s be even more vibrant. We must strive not to repeat life, but to renew it.

This requires mindfulness. It calls for reflection—asking ourselves daily: Did I live well today? Did I grow, however slightly? Did I make someone’s life a little brighter?

Positivity is the Master Key

In our golden years, we can become either bitter or better. The difference is positivity. A positive outlook doesn’t deny pain—it simply chooses to not let pain define us. It focuses on what remains rather than what’s lost. It celebrates the now rather than mourns the past.
Gratitude, forgiveness, and joy—these are habits we can cultivate, not gifts we wait for. Every senior citizen who chooses positivity becomes a silent teacher to the world: proof that age can polish the soul, not dim it.

Building Character with Empathy

Now, more than ever, we must develop character that includes empathy—especially for those who are needy, lonely, or struggling. Whether it’s another senior in distress, a child needing guidance, or a community initiative requiring wisdom—we can be the shoulders others stand on.
Let kindness be our identity. In our youth, we built careers. In these years, we must build compassion. Our legacy should be less about what we owned, and more about whom we uplifted.

A Life That Is Truly Our Own

To walk with clarity, compassion, and conviction—this is the essence of the art of living. We must own our path, with no need to compare it to anyone else’s. We must remind ourselves that every day lived meaningfully is a small victory. A fulfilled life is not one without pain—but one where pain has been transformed into wisdom.

This is not the time to fade. It is the time to shine differently.

Let us be artists of life—painting with patience, perseverance, and purpose. The Never Say Retired spirit is not about resisting age—it’s about embracing life with eyes wide open and a heart full of hope.

Let each of us say proudly:

I have not retired. I have re-fired.
The brush is in my hand.
And the best part of the painting is yet to come.

Forgetting a Little with Age Is Natural

“Well, now we are old, nothing stays in memory anymore.”

We’ve all heard this line at some point from an elderly person — or perhaps said it ourselves. Sometimes we forget someone’s name, and at other times, something important we had just thought of slips out of our mind. We may recognize a face but fail to recall the name.

All this is quite natural as age increases. It’s not a disease, but rather a normal part of the aging process. There’s no need to worry — instead, we must accept it and deal with it wisely.

Weakening Memory – A Natural Bodily Process

God has created our body and brain with a limited life cycle. As age progresses, certain glands and cells in the body begin to slow down. This includes the cells connected to memory as well.

The good news is that the brain’s abilities don’t completely disappear — they just slow down a bit. With the right “exercise,” this decline can be significantly reduced.

Our Lifestyle Is Also to Blame

In earlier times, we used to remember so many things — relatives’ addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, important dates, and more. But today’s technology-driven lifestyle has made our brain ‘lazy’. Phone directories, reminders, voice notes, and our dependence on Google have taken us away from the practice of memory retention.

Even the habit of writing things down has nearly vanished. Earlier, to remember something, we would write it multiple times — the best way to memorize a poem in school was, “Write 10 times, read 10 times.” This deepened our memory. Now we simply store it in our mobile notes — and sometimes, we even forget to look at it again.

The Brain Also Needs Regular Exercise

Just like physical exercise is needed to keep the body fit, regular practice is necessary to keep the brain active. And this exercise isn’t limited to solving puzzles or playing chess. Some simple but consistent habits can improve your memory:

  • Reading the newspaper daily and mentally summarizing the headlines.
  • Rehearsing in your mind what you plan to say, in sequence.
  • Writing down important tasks in a diary — not just typing them into a phone.
  • Recalling and narrating a story, movie, or trip to someone — an excellent memory exercise.
  • Taking up new hobbies — like music, playing an instrument, painting, or learning a new language — challenges the brain in new ways.

Use Technology, But Maintain Self-Reliance

Many people now rely on phones or diaries to keep important notes — this is not a bad habit. In fact, it’s a wise one. Some of my friends jot down every meeting or phone call briefly in their pocket diary, helping them recall details later without struggle. This habit also helps maintain their confidence.

Medical Advice Is Good, But Be Wary of Frauds

Some people consult doctors about memory issues and, if needed, take mild medications — and that’s perfectly fine. However, others fall for misleading ads on social media, such as “Memory-enhancing herb” or “Sharper mind in 5 days.” These claims are often deceptive and can sometimes harm your health.

Most Important — Keep Your Confidence Intact

Forgetting things is not a crime, nor something to be ashamed of. It’s a common human experience. But if we treat it as a disease and begin to stress over it, the problem may worsen.

We must trust ourselves. When something doesn’t come to mind, take a deep breath, pause for a moment, and calmly reflect — the answer often lies within.

Closing Thoughts

Old age is not a challenge, but a different kind of journey — where experience runs deep, even if the flow of memory slows a bit. This is natural. With the right habits, active thinking, and self-acceptance, we can make this journey even more enriching.

Remember — even if the pace of life slows down, the brilliance of memory can remain. All it takes is a steady, mindful effort to hold on to it.

Will Grandma’s Home Remedies Soon Disappear?

“Grandma, my stomach hurts a lot,” a little girl groans in pain, clinging to her grandmother. Her mother is trying to get a doctor’s appointment, but until then, the child must endure the discomfort. Smiling gently, the grandmother asks for a glass of warm water, takes out some carom seed (ajwain) powder from the kitchen cabinet, and gives the child a spoonful along with the water. Within no time, the little girl is back to playing, all cheerful again. Meanwhile, the doctor’s clinic hasn’t even picked up the call.

Scenes like this still occur in many homes, but the bigger question is — will they continue with the next generation?

Today’s generation relies almost entirely on science-based medicine, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The problem arises when they completely dismiss traditional home remedies — wisdom developed through generations of experience and passed down through oral traditions. Will this knowledge now survive only in books and internet articles?

Most of us have benefited from our grandmothers’ remedies during childhood. The kitchen often resembled a mini medical store — filled with carom seeds (अजवाइन) , asafoetida (हींग), fennel (सौंफ), turmeric (हल्दी), cinnamon (दालचीनी), basil (तुलसी), cloves (लौंग), honey (शहद), ghee (घी)… — all not just flavor enhancers, but also considered crucial for health.

For a sore throat, gargling with warm salt water; for cough, a mix of ginger and honey; for sleeplessness, a pinch of nutmeg (जायफल) in warm milk — these remedies were integral parts of our daily lives.

There were also many lifestyle habits we followed without fully understanding them — like avoiding curd at night or starting the day with lemon water on an empty stomach. These weren’t just rituals but had scientific reasoning behind them — expressed in a traditional style.

But today’s fast-paced modern life leaves little room to open grandma’s spice box. Instant-relief pills and syrups from the market have eliminated our need for patience — even if they come with side effects.

Meanwhile, though the elderly population is growing, their knowledge is not being passed on. The younger generation interacts less with them, and the elderly themselves are losing confidence. They hesitate to share their remedies or advice because children now find Google more reliable.

Yet we must ask ourselves an important question — can every problem really be solved by allopathic medicine alone? Are we truly progressing by abandoning tradition, or heading toward a deep void?

Systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy are not mere alternatives — they are time-tested medical traditions developed over thousands of years. Their foundation lies in understanding the body, living in harmony with nature, and most importantly, in patience — something the current generation lacks.

Grandparents’ remedies were not just treatments — they were connections — to family, nature, and our roots. When a grandmother placed her hand on a child’s forehead and softly said, “It’s nothing, just rest a while,” that very touch often did half the healing. This emotional healing too is becoming rare.

We must accept that if this knowledge isn’t preserved, future generations will miss out. Today, there is a need to document this traditional wisdom, teach it to children, and revive it within our homes. Whether it’s through a notebook of grandma’s remedies or storytelling sessions about spices — every effort matters.

Perhaps it’s time we introduce ‘Traditional Health Knowledge’ as an elective subject in schools, to help children understand the balance between modernity and tradition.

Grandma and grandpa’s remedies are a heritage — of experience, empathy, and a bond with nature. Losing them would not only mean a loss of knowledge, but also of cultural legacy.

Let us preserve, protect, and share this vanishing treasure — so that when a child asks, “Grandma, what should I do?” — there’s a real grandma or grandpa at home with the answer, not just a voice from a mobile screen.

Longevity is Rising — But Is Wellness Also Increasing?

One of the most striking features of modern life is the steady increase in longevity. People today are living much longer than previous generations. Yet, paradoxically, the number of those suffering from chronic ailments, both physical and mental, has risen alarmingly.

If we glance back just a few decades, in an average family, when someone passed away after the age of 65, people would say — “he lived a full life.” That was considered a satisfactory lifespan. But today, it is common to see people well into their 70s and 80s, many of them active and mobile — provided they’ve been fortunate enough to avoid serious diseases.

To put this in perspective, the official life expectancy in India in the 1980s was around 54-55 years. By the year 2000, it had risen to about 63 years, and today it stands close to 71 years, with many individuals comfortably surpassing that. Globally, life expectancy has also climbed, thanks to medical advancements, better health awareness, and improved living conditions.

However, this gift of extended life brings with it an important question — are we adding healthy years to life, or just more years of sickness and dependence? Sadly, for many, it is the latter.

It is not uncommon to find young individuals today grappling with ailments like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and anxiety. What was once termed as “lifestyle diseases” among the middle-aged has now become prevalent even among people in their 20s and 30s. Our fast-paced lives, poor dietary habits, lack of physical exercise, polluted environments, and relentless mental stress have all taken a heavy toll on health.

Recently, I had the privilege of interacting with two revered saints. Both emphasized a profound yet simple wisdom drawn from our ancient scriptures: “Man should aspire to live a full life of 100 years — but only through a life of discipline, balance, and self-awareness.” The idea is not just to live long but to live well and purposefully.

For those already in their senior years, the path to a perfectly disciplined life might seem a bit late to traverse fully. Yet, it is never too late to adopt healthier habits, stay active mentally and physically, and cultivate joy and contentment in daily living. Small changes can still yield significant improvements in quality of life.

But for the younger generation, the message is even more crucial. The time to lay the foundation for a healthy, vibrant, and fulfilling old age is now. Health, like wealth, compounds over time — good habits adopted early can pay rich dividends later. We should adopt a disciplined lifestyle at home and introduce its education in schools from an early age. Only then can the seeds of good health be sown in childhood itself. A healthy individual is not just a blessing for oneself but also for the family, society, and the nation. A healthy body nurtures healthy thoughts and energy, which form the foundation of a progressive society. Therefore, health should not be seen as a personal responsibility alone but embraced as a social duty.
Longevity, after all, is a blessing. But longevity paired with vitality and well-being is the real goal.

A Personal Reflection

As I reflect on these truths, especially having crossed the threshold of what was once considered old age, I find myself valuing health more than ever. I realise that while we may not control how long we live, we certainly influence how well we live. Observing friends, peers, and family — some thriving in their 80s while others struggle in their 60s — makes this contrast even starker.

This is my gentle reminder to myself and to all who read this: let us not wait for illness to wake us up to health. Whether we are 30 or 70, today is the best time to begin caring for our body, mind, and soul. Let us embrace habits that nourish us, relationships that uplift us, and a mindset that keeps us curious and cheerful.

Let us aspire not just for a longer life, but for a life that remains meaningful, graceful, and joyful till the very end.
