Events around the country should give a shiver to everyone. Small girls going to play schools are subjected to such inhuman acts by the demons from our own society. Read any newspaper or watch the TV channels and one will find such news items every day. Where have we landed ourselves? Are these the ‘sanskars’ that we have got in this country of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna.
We have certainly
failed in our education – be it at home, in schools/colleges or in religious
congregations. Reasons could be manifold but crying over spilled milk will not
help. Let us take a vow today that it is we who are going to set things right.
It must have taken ages for such a situation to arise and it may take ages to
set things right but a start has to be made. If we are to close our eyes to all
this then the generations to come will not forgive us for our inaction.
Someone had rightly
said, “the destiny of India is being shaped in her classrooms”.
It is time that we
lay more stress on ethics and value education in our day to day teaching. And
it should not be confined only in the morning assemblies but ways could be
found to inculcate this attitude in the pupil through teachings in all
subjects. While giving examples while taking up a subject such positive and
effective changes could be made.
Today’s students
would become a teacher, a judge, a lawyer, a policeman, a doctor, a politician,
a professional, a businessman and so on. But at the same time they can also
become someone who would indulge in all the unwanted activities. We should
appreciate as to how important is the role of values and ethics in education.
In fact one can say with conviction that ‘education without values is of no
value’.
The news that we
read so often of rapes, insensitiveness of the police, scams, corruption, etc.
have increased manifold in recent times. However, most of the persons involved
in such acts are educated. It is here that one has to understand that either we
are missing something in the teachings or our teachers do not convince us as
their preaching is not what they practice.
Our mindset has to
change from individualism to the society and all this for our own good. After
all we all also have a family, we also stay in a society and never expect that
the happenings to others is not affecting us. Wherever one can influence – at
home, work place or social gatherings talk about this and motivate others to do
whatever is possible to give the right ‘sanskars’
